Sophomore shines for historic South Iredell squad, leads 21-member All-Iredell softball team

This spring, South Iredell's softball team enjoyed the best season in program history, coming within two wins of playing for the N.C. High School Athletic Association 7A state championship. A sophomore had a leading role in making it possible.

Consistently second in the hitting order, Myers led the Vikings in batting average (.500), on-base percentage (.593), hits (47) and doubles (13). She struck out just five times in 114 plate appearances.

Her four home runs were third on a team that captured the North Piedmont 6A-7A Conference regular-season and tournament championships, advanced to the 7A Western Regional Final-the Vikings' first regional final appearance-and finished 22-8.

Myers, the NPC Player of the Year, also ranked second among all Vikings players in RBIs with 37.

"She has been a huge part of our offense by driving in runs and getting on base," South Iredell coach Kaylee Johnson said.

In three wins against North Iredell and NPC Pitcher of the Year Kynlie Moss, Myers batted 6-for-10 with three doubles and three RBIs while scoring five runs.

Myers was a combined 4-for-6 with three RBIs in South Iredell's first two playoff victories over Marvin Ridge and Reagan. She also hit safely in the fourth round against East Forsyth and regionals against Weddington, which won the best-of-3 series on its way to claiming the 7A state title and finishing No. 1 in the state, regardless of classification.

Johnson also referred to Myers as "a vital part of our defense" in the infield.

In 111 total chances, the shortstop committed only eight errors and "made ESPN plays along the way," Johnson said.

Myers started all 30 games at shortstop. But she also filled in as catcher during the Vikings' spring break road trip to the North Carolina coast.

"She is a player who you can put in any spot and she will step up and do what you need her to do," Johnson said.
