NC State beats Charlotte 10-6 in first college baseball game at BB&T Ballpark
N.C. State pitcher Tommy DeJuneas made his first appearance at BB&T Ballpark a special one – and a winning one for the Wolfpack.
The Providence High graduate came through in relief against Charlotte, getting the save in N.C. State’s 10-6 victory against the 49ers on Tuesday in the first college baseball game played at the downtown ballpark.
DeJuneas struck out two and held Charlotte (10-13) to one hit over the final two innings, earning his third save of the season and giving N.C. State (18-9) its seventh consecutive victory.
“I was maybe a little nervous the first couple warmup pitches,” said DeJuneas, who led Providence to back-to-back 4A state championships in 2011-12. “But once I got in there, it was like any other game.
“It was great to be back – a lot of my family was here. This might have been the first time my grandmother saw me pitch. It was just great being back.”
DeJuneas came on in the eighth inning with a man on first and none out and the Wolfpack leading 7-5. The freshman struck out the first two batters he faced and got the third out on a pop-up to get out of the inning.
The Wolfpack then gave themselves some breathing room, scoring three times in the ninth off reliever Logan Sherer to push their lead to 10-5.
Ryan Williamson (2-1) got the win for N.C. State, striking out a career-best seven batters in 51/3 innings as the Wolfpack pulled ahead 6-2.
But once Williamson came out, the 49ers were able to take advantage of N.C. State’s middle relievers, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within 6-5.
Freshman Matt Horkey (1-2) took the loss for Charlotte, giving up seven hits and four earned runs over 32/3 innings.
Joe Dunand had two hits and drove in four runs for the Wolfpack, which had 15 hits. Jake Fincher added three hits, and Andrew Knizner had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Luke Gibbs had two hits and drove in two runs for the 49ers, with Sherer adding two hits and Hunter Jones scoring two runs.
