NC State’s Richardson suspended after DWI arrest

N.C. State suspended right tackle Will Richardson on Sunday after he was arrested for driving while impaired on early Sunday morning in Raleigh.

Richardson, a redshirt freshman, started the first eight games for the Wolfpack. The school announced his indefinite suspension on Sunday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Raleigh Police Department said the arrest report hadn’t been completed and entered into the system on Sunday but that Richardson, 19, was arrested by Raleigh Police in the vicinity of Hillsborough and Gardner Streets.

Under university rules, students who get a DWI on or near campus are subject to semester suspension. Former football player Logan Winkles and former basketball player Staats Battle were recently punished accordingly for similar DWI charges.

If Richardson is suspended for the semester, he would be out for the rest of the regular season.

Richardson is the second N.C. State player that has been suspended this season by coach Dave Doeren. Running back Shadrach Thornton was suspended for the first two games of the season for violating an unspecified university rule and then dismissed after an arrest involving a moped accident.

The Wolfpack hasn’t had much consistency in the starting lineup on the offensive line this season. With injuries to guards Alex Barr and Bryce Kennedy, N.C. State has had three different line combinations in the first eight games.

Redshirt freshman Tyler Jones, who started two games at left guard, is likely to replace Richardson in the starting lineup for next week’s game at Boston College.
