The teams in the Raleigh regional
N.C. State is hosting the NCAA regional at Doak Field at Dail Park and is the No. 1 seed. Here’s a look at the field:
Navy Midshipmen
Regional seed: 4.
Coach: Paul Kostacopoulos, 11th year at Navy.
Record: 42-14-1. RPI: 145.
Conference: Patriot League champions.
Last NCAA appearance: 2011 in Charlottesville (Va.) Regional. Navy was 0-2, losing to Virginia and East Carolina.
Starpower: Senior left-hander Luke Gillingham was the Patriot League pitcher of the year after going 8-3 with a 1.96 ERA. Freshman righty Noah Song (9-3, 2.47) was the league’s rookie of the year. … Outfielder Robert Currie is hitting .351 and was an All-Patriot League selection.
Of note: Navy has a team earned-run average of 2.78 and ranked second nationally with 12 shutouts. The Midshipmen are 23-6 in their last 29 games.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
Regional seed: 2.
Coach: Gary Gilmore, 21st year at CCU.
Record: 44-15. RPI: 12.
Conference: Big South regular-season and tournament champion.
Last NCAA appearance: 2015, College Station (Texas) Regional.
Starpower: Senior outfielder Connor Owings, hitting .383 with a .701 slugging percentage, was the Big South player of the year. Junior right-hander Andrew Beckwith (10-1, 1.79 ERA) was named the league’s pitcher of the year.
Of note: The Chanticleers began the season 11-8, then have gone 33-7, winning 21 of their last 23. Coastal lost to N.C. State 13-10 on Feb. 20 and had wins over Duke and Wake Forest this season.
Saint Mary’s Gaels
Regional seed: 3
Coach: Eric Valenzuela, third year at Saint Mary’s.
Record: 33-23. RPI: 57.
Conference: West Coast Conference tournament champions.
Last NCAA appearance: Gaels are making first NCAA tournament appearance.
Starpower: Junior right-hander Corbin Burnes is 9-1 with a 2.23 ERA and the Gaels were 14-1 when he pitched. He ranked 17th nationally with 112 strikeouts. … Sophomore second baseman Zach Kirtley was named MVP in the WCC Tournament, hitting .588.
Of note: The Gaels have beaten four NCAA tournament teams this season, including Pac-12 champion Utah and runner-up Washington.
