The controversial offside onside kick in the ACC Championship game

Down 45-37 to No. 1 Clemson and with 1 minute and 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s ACC Championship game, North Carolina lined up for an onside kick.

UNC’s Freeman Jones kicked the ball and then Hunter Crafford recovered it at the UNC 48-yard line. However, UNC was flagged for an offsides penalty – a penalty that can’t be reviewed by replay officials.

“The 35-yard line is treated as a plane and if any part of a player breaks that plane before the ball is kicked it’s offsides. The officials saw a member of the kicking team break the plane before the ball was kicked,” according to a statement from the ACC.

We’ve pulled three still frames from the controversial play, which show when Jones kicks the ball and the position of his teammates and the official who threw the flag.
