N&O roundup: Apex rally comes up short against Green Hope

Apex moved versatile athlete Ian Boyd to quarterback in the fourth quarter, and in less than four minutes he had three touchdown passes. But the comeback effort came up short, as Green Hope always had an answer for the Cougars in a 41-33 Southwest Wake 4A victory.

Bunn 42, Roanoke Rapids 7: Bunn racked up 387 total yards, including 158 from Tevin Perry on 16 carries. Roanoke Rapids dropped to 5-3 and 1-1 in the Northern Carolina 2A.

Cardinal Gibbons 42, Jordan 13: Dalen Spruill rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns in a PAC-6 win. The game was called with 10:57 to play after a Jordan player was taken off the field on a stretcher after trying to make a tackle.

Cary 49, Athens Drive 20: Isaiah Gibbons rushed for 184 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Imps scored their most points in a game since 2010. Keeyon Hicks tossed for 144 yards and two scores while rushing for another touchdown for Cary (2-5). Tre Echols threw for 260 yards for Athens Drive (0-9), 171 of which went to Jordan Johnson. David McMillian found the end zone twice for the Jaguars.

Corinth Holders 40, Triton 14: Kaelin O’Neal ran for three touchdowns and Jordan Neal two as Corinth Holders repelled Triton (1-7, 0-2 Two Rivers 3A). Shamarko Wortham recovered a fumble in the end zone for the Pirates’ (7-1, 2-0) other score. Byron Massey and Demarius Staton scored the Hawks’ touchdowns.

KIPP Pride 44, Louisburg 38: KIPP Pride used a goal-line stand in the final minute to hold off host Louisburg in a Tar-Roanoke 1A thriller. KIPP (2-6, 2-0) took the lead for good on a 1-yard touchdown plunge from Marvin Moody with 8:11 remaining in the fourth period. After an exchange of possessions, the Warriors (0-8, 0-2) drove 76 yards in 11 plays, only to be stopped on fourth-and-goal at the 3-yard line.

Hillside 48, Riverside 0: Hillside (6-2, 4-0 PAC-6 4A) scored on its first three drives of the game and has now won five straight. Chauncey Caldwell threw for 119 yards and four touchdowns for the Hornets on just six completions before being replaced in the fourth quarter. Riverside (2-6, 0-3) struggled all game to muster up any offense, totaling just 67 yards. Evan Murphy went 5 for 11 with 32 yards passing.

Leesville Road 55, Enloe 13: The Pride got back on the winning track against the Eagles.

Northwood 34, J.F. Webb 13: Montel Goods ran for 213 yards and four touchdowns as the Chargers picked up a Big 8 3A win against the Warriors.

South Granville 43, Southern Vance 0: The Vikings’ shut out gives South Granville (3-5, 2-0) back-to-back wins and tied with Bunn for the Northern Carolina 2A lead going into next week’s game. The Raiders fell to 2-6, 0-2.

Western Harnett 38, Smithfield-Selma 13: Western Harnett (2-5, 1-1) used a dominating rushing game in the first half to set up its first Two Rivers 3A Conference win of the season. Juniors Javontay Gaddy and Tyler Hoener combined for 201 yards and four touchdowns as the Eagles coasted to a 26-7 halftime lead.

SSS (0-8, 0-2) cut the margin to 26-13 in the third quarter, but Haseen Swann got the Eagles rolling again with a blocked punt recovery in the endzone to push the hosts’ lead to 32-13.
