High school notebook: Sanderson baseball hosts Apex for Wake County Invitational title
Sanderson will host Apex for the Wake County Baseball Invitational championship game Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Holly Springs, which is also 2-0 thus far in the tournament sponsored by the Factor Baseball Institute in Wake Forest, plays Knightdale in the 4:30 p.m. game.
At East Wake, Southeast Raleigh visits the Warriors at 4:30 p.m. and Heritage plays Fuquay-Varina at 7:30 p.m.
All-State basketball: Apex senior Ian Boyd and Millbrook senior Kai Crutchfield were named the N.C. Coaches Basketball Association state players of the year.
Voyager Academy’s Jay Huff also made the first team in boys basketball, joining Boyd, East Lincoln’s Sage Surratt, North Mecklenburg’s Davion Mintz and Jay M. Robinson’s Lavar Batts Jr.
Garner’s Thomas Allen, Cary’s Cory Gensler, Farmville Central’s Tyler Maye, Havelock’s Kryan Bowman and Fayetteville Terry Sanford’s Telligence Johnson were on the second team. The third team had Terry Sanford’s Isaiah Stallings, Mount Airy’s Clay Mounce, Hayesville’s Zach Cottrell, Concord’s Rechon Black and North Mecklenburg’s Jaylen McManus.
Absent from the team was Roxboro Community junior Darius McGhee, the first player in NCHSAA history to score 1,000 points in a season.
Rosewood’s Lexi Mercer also made the first team in girls basketball, joining Crutchfield, East Davidson’s Bayley Plummer, Freedom’s Ariyana Williams and East Bladen’s Lacey Suggs.
Millbrook’s Dazia Powell was joined on the second team by Berry Academy’s Ra’Shika White, Pisgah’s Brooklyn Allen, Myers Park’s Chanin Scott and Northwest Guilford’s Haley Barber. East Wake’s Angel Rizor was joined on the third team by (Jacksonville) Northside’s Kayla Stephens, Terry Sanford’s Ona Udoh, Freedom’s Lindsey Adams and Southwest Guilford’s Lashonda Monk.
Bobby Murray: The Bobby Murray Invitational will be played Thursday through Saturday at Millbrook and Wakefield. The tournament is divided into two four-team pools with the first two rounds already decided. Saturday’s final games are all at Millbrook at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The Millbrook pool also includes Broughton, Green Hope and Southwest Guilford. South Granville, Northwood and Middle Creek round out the Wakefield pool.
JCEI baseball: The Johnston County Easter Invitational continues Monday at South Johnston with a postponed second-round game between West Johnston and Triton.
The loser plays Smithfield-Selma in the noon game, and the winner comes back to play Clayton in the semifinals at 5 p.m. The other semifinal features Bunn and Cleveland at 7:30 p.m.
Harnett Central plays South Johnston at 2:30 p.m.
Tuesday’s games are set for noon, 2, 5 and 7 p.m.
Bunn’s Spencer Brickhouse, an East Carolina recruit ranked one of the nation’s top 100 seniors, won the JCEI home run derby on Saturday with one in the first round and six in the second.
J.F. Webb tournament: The J.F. Webb Easter baseball tournament title will be between the host Warriors and Kerr-Vance Academy Monday at 7 p.m.
Franklin Academy will play Northern Vance at 4 p.m., Oxford Prep and Roxboro Community at 1:30 p.m. and Southern Vance and Granville Central at 11:30 a.m.
Bullock’s big day: South Granville junior Justin Bullock, ranked one of the best players in the nation, had a big day on Wednesday. He was 4-of-4 with three homers and eight RBIs and was the winning pitcher in a 5-inning, 1-hitter against Keystone Oaks (Pa.). He struck out 13 of his 15 recorded outs.
Triple play: The Heritage baseball team got a rare triple play at Wake Forest on Tuesday.
The Huskies threw out the runners at first, then home and then gunned down another runner trying to get back to second. Heritage won 6-4.
Hilltop Invitational: Eighteen baseball teams will play at East Chapel Hill, Orange, Chapel Hill and Cedar Ridge as part of the Hilltop Invitational in a round-robin Hilltop Invitational. A full tournament schedule is available at orangepanthersbaseball.com.
Harnett Central Invitational: The Harnett Central softball team is hosting a three-game, two-day tournament Tuesday and Wednesday. Among the other area teams are South Johnston, Union Pines, Western Harnett and Triton.
Golden Leaf Invitational: Twenty-two baseball teams will be playing in the third-annual Golden Leaf Invitational hosted by Barton College, historic Fleming Stadium, Fike High and Hunt High in Wilson. A full round-robin schedule is available at huntwarriorsbaseball.com.
Deacon Jones Invitational: North Johnston, host Princeton, Spring Creek and Cape Hatteras are playing in the Deacon Jones Invitational Thursday and Friday. North Johnston and Spring Creek have the 4 p.m. game and Princeton and Cape Hatteras play at 7. The same times are set for Friday’s championship and third-place game.
Chatlee Invitational: Southern Lee and Union Pines are hosting the Chatlee Invitational in two three-team pools starting Thursday. Apex Friendship and Anson County are competing at Southern Lee while Overhills and Voyager Academy are at Union Pines.
New coach: Green Hope has hired David Corsbie to take over its boys soccer program. Corsbie was an interim head coach after Caleb Norkus resigned going into the postseason. He coached the Garner girls for three seasons.
