Big 8 all-conference baseball, softball, girls soccer, boys lacrosse, boys tennis and track and field
Orange catcher Brad Debo and pitcher Bryce Wilson, two of the nation’s top recruits, won top honors in Big-8 post-season, with Debo being named the conference’s baseball player of the year and Wilson named pitcher of the year.
Debo, headed next year to South Carolina, led Orange (21-7) in both batting average (.446) and ruyns batted in (29) this year. Wilson, a signee for North Carolina, went 10-2 on the mound with a sizzling ERA of 0.75. Wilson also hit .333 to help Orange win the Big-8 championship and get as far as the state quarterfinals of the 3A playoffs.
Wilson and Debo lost only once in the regular season when they teamed as Orange’s starting battery.
Orange schoolmate Mia Davidson was the clear choice for player of the year in Big-8 softball. She batted .740 with 18 home runs and 49 RBIs to help Orange finish 23-4. Earlier Thursday she was announced as Gatorade’s Softball Player of the Year for North Carolina.
Anna Jasper was the Big-8 softball pitcher of the year, and Charger coach Butch Edenfield was named coach of the year after guiding the Chargers (20-3) to a share of the conference championship.
Noah Williams of Oxford Webb was the Big-8’s golfer of the year after winning the conference championship this spring. Matthew Hanson of Northwood was voted coach of the year by his peers,
Top honors in boys lacrosse were split among the Big-8 teams. Carrboro’s Luke Knowles was voted Most valuable Player, while teammate Jake Melville was named the offensive player of the year. Northwood’s Wesley Roberson was the defensive player off the year, and Chapel Hill’s Kyle Hornik was the goalkeeper of the year.
Chapel Hill (17-3-2, 11-0) rolled undefeated through its Big-8 girls soccer schedule, and the Tigers’ Morgan Brandewie ended up as the league’s player of the year. Jason Curtis, who once said Brandewie could excel any position on the field, was voted coach of the year. Cedar Ridge’s Taylin Jean, was named goalkeeper of the year.
Big-8 singles champion David Mirzoyan of Chapel Hill was announced as the conference’s tennis player of the year, while Orange’s Justin Webb, host for this year’s conference tournament, was chosen as coach of the year.
Joan Nesbit Mabe was voted as track and field’s Big-8 coach of the year after Chapel Hill swept the boys’ and girls’ championships this spring.
Triple winner Mya Daye of Northern Vance (100, 200 and 400 meters) was picked as the Big-8’s female runner of the year, while discus champion Mia Terry of Oxford Webb was named female field athlete of the year.
Chapel Hill’s Harrison Young was Big-8’s the male runner off the year after winning the conference championships in the 200- and 400-meters and anchoring the Tigers’ title-winning 4x400 relay.
Jeremy Cates of Cedar Ridge, Big-8 champion in the shot put and discus, beat out Orange’s Jamar Davis (long- and triple-jump) as the conference’s male field athlete of the year.
