Canes trim roster by 16 players

The Carolina Hurricanes trimmed their training camp roster by 16 players Friday, reducing the roster to 33.

Forwards Zach Boychuk, T.J. Hensick and Justin Shugg, and defenseman Rasmus Rissanen will be assigned to the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL, pending NHL waivers.

Forwards Erik Karlsson, Patrick Brown, Kyle Hagel and Carter Sandlak, defensemen Danny Biega, Keegan Lowe, Tyler Ganly and Jake Chelios; and goaltenders Rasmus Tirronen and Daniel Altshuller also have been assigned to Charlotte.

Forward Lucas Wallmark has been assigned to Lulea of the Swedish Hockey League. Defenseman Roland McKeown has been returned to his junior team, Kingston of the Ontario Hockey League.

The Canes left Friday for a two-game trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and St. Johns, Newfoundland, for exhibition games against the New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators.
