No Sleep ’Til Brooklyn?

Evidently, the Carolina Hurricanes listened to the Beastie Boys’ rap song, then added their own twist to the iconic anthem for the better part of two periods.

It was a suboptimal approach for a team facing a Stanley Cup Playoff contender. Even if it paid off.

The Hurricanes completed their longest road trip of the season by sleepwalking for 40 minutes before rallying for a 3-2 overtime win over the New York Islanders Thursday night at Barclays Center.

Ron Hainsey’s breakaway goal with 2:39 left in overtime was the game-winner. It also marked the only time the Hurricanes led in the game.

Eddie Lack made 17 saves in his third start. Brock McGinn and Chris Terry also scored for the Hurricanes.

Following the win, the Canes are 4-6-0 in the 2015-16 season. They finished the seven-game road trip, due to the State Fair, with a 4-3-0 mark, and will return to PNC Arena Friday night to begin a four-game home stand. The Canes have only played two games at PNC Arena this season.

With the Canes trailing 2-1 late in the third, Terry scored his second goal of the season off of a feed from Jordan Staal. The primary assist was Staal’s first point of the season.

Terry’s goal was the result of a third period in which the Canes pressured the Islanders, outshooting them 13-4. Essentially, it was the diametric opposite of the first two periods, which were devoid of flow. Instead of playing with tempo, both teams spent the first 40 minutes grinding along the boards.

Frans Nielsen snapped a 1-1 tie late in the second as the New York center capped a brilliant up-ice rush with a power play goal. With Terry in the box for high-sticking Kyle Okposo, Nielsen carried the puck from the Islanders’ end into the offensive zone, where he weaved past Canes defenseman Justin Faulk before using his reach to beat Lack for his fourth of the season.

The longtime rivals were deadlocked 1-1 after the opening period. New York fourth-liner Matt Martin opened the scoring 8:56 into the match with his first goal of the season. The Canes drew even at 15 minutes when McGinn scored his second goal in six games with a wrist shot from the slot.

A day that ended with the Canes’ fourth win of the season began with Bill Peters breaking a bit of team-related news.

Following the morning skate, Peters “guaranteed” rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin will remain with the team throughout the 2015-16 season.

“He’s a NHL (defenseman) and I like him. I like him a lot,” Peters said of the fifth overall pick in last June’s draft. “I’ve liked everything about him. I enjoy his game immensely. He’s a real good player, he’s going to be a star in this league. We took him out (Tuesday in Detroit) to freshen him up. He’ll come out again to get freshened up when it’s the right time; I don’t know when that time’s going to be. He can be more physical, he knows that. He can be a guy who’s dynamic when he skates and moves his feet, and that’s what I expect here tonight. A real good puck-moving ‘D.’”
