Quick hits from the morning skate: Canes-Jets

The Carolina Hurricanes will be without defenseman Justin Faulk and goalie Cam Ward on Tuesday against the Winnipeg Jets, but Canes coach Bill Peters said both should be close to returning.

Faulk, who has missed the past two games with a lower-body injury, took part in the morning skate Tuesday at PNC Arena. Peters said he would not play against the Jets but should go through a full practice Wednesday and be with the team for the trip to Ottawa.

The Canes on Tuesday recalled goalie Daniel Altshuller from the Charlotte Checkers to serve as a backup to starter Eddie Lack for the Jets game. Peters said Ward, who was injured Saturday during the New York Islanders game, also could go on the one-game trip to Ottawa.

“If this is Game 82 and we need to win, he’s available, but it’s not,” Peters said. “With the history of the injuries he’s had we want to smart about this.”

Feb. 5 meeting: The Canes jumped to a 4-0 lead over the Jets and won 5-3 when the two teams played Feb. 5 in Winnipeg.

Asked what his team could take away from that win, Peters said, “Not a lot really because coming out of that All-Star break it’s so hard. Both games coming out of that break for us were uncharacteristic. The more recent games are a more true indication of how both teams play.”

The Canes were lackluster in the first game after the break, losing 4-1 at Calgary. Two nights later, Phil Di Giuseppe, Andrej Nestrasil, Jordan Staal and Faulk all scored in the first against the Jets.

The Jets pulled within 4-3 in the third before Nestrasil scored again with 1:20 left in regulation.

“We learned a valuable lesson there, just in terms of quickness and style of game,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said Tuesday. “We weren’t ready to play that game. Played better in the second, solid in the third and more the way our team has looked more recently.”

The Jets have won their last four road games and also have won the past five games at PNC Arena.

Hainsey, Flavin paired: With Faulk out, the Canes had Ron Hainsey paired with Jaccob Slavin, John-Michael Liles with Brett Pesce and Noah Hanifin with Michal Jordan on the back end at the skate.

The lines will remain Eric Staal centering Phil DiGiuseppe and Kris Versteeg, Jordan Staal centering Joakim Nordstrom and Nestrasil, Victor Rask at center with Jeff Skinner and Elias Lindholm, and Jay McClement with Chris Terry and Riley Nash. Nathan Gerbe and Brad Malone are the extra forwards.

Lack will be making his first start since the Calgary game, when he allowed four goals on 24 shots. He gave up a goal on 10 shots in relief of Ward on Saturday in the 6-3 win over the Isles.

Joakim Nordstrom will play his 100th NHL game: The Jets will be without defenseman Mark Stuart, out four to six weeks with a broken hand. Adam Pardy replaces Stuart and will be paired with Jacob Trouba. … Carolina is 12-4-1 when outshot by its opponent, but 12-17-9 when it has had more shot.
