The UNC scandal
THE BACKGROUND
An unusual B-plus grade on a football player's transcript has unearthed an academic fraud scandal involving athletics at UNC-Chapel Hill. That grade ultimately pointed to more than 200 lecture-style classes that never met from 1997 to 2011, as well as hundreds of suspect independent studies enrollments and unauthorized grade changes, all within the Department of African and Afro-American Studies. Athletes were heavily enrolled in many of these classes. The department chairman has since resigned and been forced into retirement, and reforms have been enacted to try to prevent future problems. Five investigations or reviews have been launched to try to figure out what happened, including one that is looking at whether crimes were committed.
