'Hondros,' the film about the acclaimed combat photographer, is now on Netflix
"Hondros," the acclaimed documentary about late combat photographer and NC State graduate Chris Hondros, is now on Netflix.
The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2017, where it won the audience award. It has been available on other streaming services and select movie theaters in major cities since March.
But Sunday, it became available on Netflix to the streaming service's 125 million subscribers worldwide.
Hondros, who was killed in Libya in April 2011, grew up in Fayetteville and graduated from NC State University, where he majored in English literature and worked at the Technician, the campus paper.
He worked at The Fayetteville Observer for a few years before moving to New York in 1998. He documented the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and hopscotched around the country covering Sen. John Kerry’s presidential campaign. Conflict zones like Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and Liberia became his office.
His work was internationally known. He was a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography.
He was working for Getty Images in Misurata, Libya, when he and Oscar-nominated documentarian Tim Hetherington were killed in a mortar attack.
Hondros was 41.
His childhood friend, journalist Greg Campbell, launched a Kickstarter campaign to create the film as a way to honor his legacy. Campbell criss-crossed the globe, talking to some of the subjects of Hondros' pivotal works.
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who narrated the Kickstarter video, and actor Jake Gyllenhaal are executive producers.
The Chris Hondros Fund, established in his honor after his death in 2011, seeks to continue his mission of photographing the human experience in these conflict zones. It not only preserves his legacy but also awards grants and fellowships to photojournalists whose work carries on Hondros’ spirit.
Hondros' family still lives in North Carolina.
The film also can be seen on at iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play, Vudu and Fandango Now.
