Our picks
Circus No. 9
There’s a generous helping of jazz under the big top with Circus No. 9, and they lean toward the jammier side of ’grass, but they don’t really like to be hemmed in by genres. Whatever their sound is, they play it well (Two members are nominated for instrumental Momentum Awards this year). At their live shows, expect lots of improvisation and lots of fun.
Where to find them: 8:10 p.m., Raleigh Convention Center, Room 304, Bluegrass Ramble; 1 a.m., Marriott Congressional Ballroom, Bluegrass Ramble
Hawktail
If you follow roots music, you’ve likely seen the members of Hawktail before, separately, in bands including Punch Brothers, Dave Rawlings Machine and Crooked Still. You may have heard them at various points on the public radio show “Live From Here.” In this configuration, fiddle player Brittany Haas, bassist Paul Kowert, guitarist Jordan Tice, and mandolin player Dominick Leslie combine forces for instrumental tunes that are by turns sprightly and somber, traditional and groundbreaking, bringing instrumental music into a new era.
Where you can see them: 8:45 p.m., Raleigh Convention Center Masters Workshop Stage, Bluegrass Ramble; 10 p.m., Marriott State Ballroom AB, Bluegrass Ramble; Midnight, Lincoln Theater, Bluegrass Ramble
Po’ Ramblin’ Boys
These guys are keeping traditional bluegrass alive, right down to the bus they tour in, a 1965 GM 4016 that once belonged to Vince Combs & The Shade Tree Grass. They’re also creating a name for themselves the old-fashioned way – touring hard and putting on consistently entertaining shows, including at last year’s World of Bluegrass. If you missed them then, now’s the time to catch up. Newly signed to Rounder Records and nominated for IBMA’s Emerging Artist award, they’re about to be big.
Where you can see them: 11 p.m., Lincoln Theater, Bluegrass Ramble
Appalachian Road Show
This project from Barry Abernathy and Darrell Webb celebrates the history, culture and music of the Appalachian Mountains. Expect plenty of dance tunes, along with a dose of history between songs. The 11 p.m. show is a party to celebrate the release of the group’s album next month.
Where to see them: 8 p.m., Pour House, Bluegrass Ramble; 11 p.m., King’s, Bluegrass Ramble
