We’re really not even over last week’s non-stop drama between the 2018 Miss North Carolina Caelynn Miller-Keyes and her apparent nemesis, Miss Alabama Hannah Brown, but Week 4 dumped us right back into it.
Hannah B., as Miss Alabama is known on the show, said about one minute into Monday night’s episode that she woke up after last week’s rose ceremony feeling “emotionally exhausted.”
We know the feeling.
(A brief recap: the two women were roommates at the Miss USA pageant last year, but when Caelynn, who now lives in Charlotte, won first runner-up in the pageant and Hannah B. didn’t place, the friendship fell apart. Hannah B. is particularly sensitive to having to “compete” with Caelynn again, and she has struggled with seeing how much Colton seems to really like Caelynn. She told Colton last week that Caelynn is “fake” and “hostile,” and then Caelynn told Colton that Hannah B. is “manipulative.” Bottom line: they can’t stand each other. Here’s the rest of what happened in Week 4 of “The Bachelor.”
Call me by my name
Did host Chris Harrison make Hannah B.’s jealousy of Caelynn any better when he walked into the room full of women the morning after All That Drama and addressed Hannah B. as “Caelynn”?
No, he did not. Was it an accident? I doubt it.
Hannah told Chris that the night before, things were said about her that shouldn’t have been said, and she had to defend herself a lot and “it wasn’t fun.”
Caelynn told the camera in response that Hannah B. is “like a gnat that won’t go away, it’s just an annoyance.” Caelynn said she has moved on, but Hannah B. won’t let it go. Caelynn said she wants to focus on Colton and she hoped they could “put these weird things in the past.”
Road to Singapore
Chris told the women they were leaving almost immediately for Singapore, so the show officially went on the road.
Tayshia got the first date of Singapore. Our recap focuses on the North Carolina contestant, so we don’t go into a lot of detail about all the other women (we’re down to 15 now), but she did get a rose and will continue on her Bachelor Journey.
Back at the house, the women heard who gets the next one-on-one date and who gets to go on the group date. Hannah B. told us that she doesn’t care who gets the one-on-one as long as it’s not Caelynn.
It was Caelynn.
“This is the most hurtful result that could have happened this week,” she told the camera, before throwing back some more wine.
Demi (she’s the younger one who antagonizes the older women in the house) told Caelynn that she didn’t like that there was going to be more attention on “this whole situation” and Caelynn basically shrugged her shoulders and said “OK, that’s your opinion. I’m over it.”
Seriously can’t wait for Demi to exit this show. She is truly awful.
Colton’s group date with 13 women involved a round of “leech therapy,” which is designed to “remove toxins.” Hey, let’s throw a big ole leech on this whole show!
We did get to see Hannah B. with a leech on her stomach, telling the camera, “I thought Caelynn stayed at home, but the leech followed me here!”
Meanwhile, Caelynn and Tayshia were back at the house and chatted about how glad they were not to be on the group date. Tayshia asked Caelynn what she missed while she was with Colton and Caelynn explained that Hannah B. was upset that Caelynn was picked for the one-on-one.
“If she doesn’t get the time that she wants or needs, I think it could be a repeat of behavior that we’ve seen before,” Caelynn told her.
The show then switched back to the group date and Hannah B. was complaining that Colton was not paying any attention to her — that he was focusing on all the women except for her. Of course, she blamed that on Caelynn. Hannah B. was so desperate to impress Colton that she ate a fish eye.
At the cocktail party after the group date, Hannah B. grabbed Colton for a few minutes alone. While they were out of the room, the women said they hoped the “pageant drama” got left behind, but they really didn’t think it was over.
Hannah B. told Colton she didn’t want him to think she’s a bad person. He told her he really likes her and they kissed (but not like he kissed Cassie right after!). Hannah B. came out of it with her confidence restored.
There was some drama between Demi and Courtney. It’s not worth getting into. It was way worse at the end of the show.
‘I didn’t clap’
We got another clue about the Hannah B. - Caelynn hate when Hannah B. was telling the camera how “OK” she was with Caelynn getting a one-on-one date with Colton. Totally OK, she said in a shaky voice — but not ecstatic.
Then this: “She was first runner-up in Miss USA, and I didn’t clap. I should have clapped for her when she walked out for her one-on-one!”
Could their bad blood have started because Hannah B. didn’t clap?
Caelynn’s one-on-one date
It started with Caelynn getting a hand-delivered invitation for her date. She left the room of women (there was no clapping) and met Colton downstairs with a chauffeur, and he told her they were going shopping.
Upstairs, Hannah B. was telling Hannah G. that she thought Caelynn would enjoy being pampered on a date (wouldn’t they all?) but she didn’t want to talk about them or think about them. She waited a full two seconds before adding, “What if he buys her shoes and a dress?” (this is the absolute worst scenario for the date she can imagine?).
Oh, he bought her shoes and dresses. Plural.
Caelynn and Colton went to a boutique and she tried on lots of clothes, and it appeared that Colton (aka ABC) bought her a bunch of stuff. They were having a lot of fun.
“I’ve never in my life been on a date like this,” she said. “It was really special.” Colton loved it, too. “Every single time she tries something on, she looks amazing ... Caelynn and I just have this really good chemistry. I have this energy and this excitement that I just can’t contain. What we built today, I hope we can carry it over into tonight.”
Caelynn went back to the house carrying “a ridiculous amount of bags,” and the women pretended through clenched teeth to be happy for her. She showed them her stuff and there were lots of “oohs” and “aahs,” but Hannah B. and Cassie and Demi were struggling with their jealousy.
Even with all of this, the date wasn’t over. The evening part of the one-on-one date was still to come.
A serious turn
When Caelynn went to dinner with Colton that night, she wanted to talk to him about a personal trauma from her past, something that has left her with intimacy issues.
“I like to be this happy-go-lucky, goofy, fun person, but it’s a conversation we need to have.”
At dinner, Colton could hardly stop kissing her and telling her how beautiful she looked. Caelynn told Colton she would have been just as happy to have tried on clothes all day, she didn’t need to have them — but she appreciated it, she told him. Colton told her when a person looks the way she looked in the clothes she tried on, you have to buy them.
Caelynn told Colton that he makes her “so happy” and she hasn’t felt that way in a long time.
Then she got very serious.
During Caelynn’s time as Miss North Carolina, she was open about the fact that she was a victim of sexual assault, and part of her platform was being an advocate for assault survivors.
She went into a little more detail with Colton, telling him that four years ago, when she was a sophomore in college, she was at a party and someone drugged her wine and she woke up naked with no memory of the night before. Caelynn, a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, and two of her friends were drugged and raped at that party. Caelynn was assaulted while drunken frat boys watched and took photos.
She went to hospital for a rape kit, she told Colton, but was turned away. She went to a second hospital and got the rape kit. One boy was expelled from school but “the rest of them got away with it,” she said.
Colton told her he knew talking about that couldn’t have been easy, and knowing it happened to her is devastating for him.
Caelynn described the aftermath of trying to deal with it, and it was really awful to hear.
“I’m not going to let it diminish me or who I am,” she said.
“I want you to know with me, you’re safe,” Colton told her.
It was very moving and the two hugged afterward. Then Colton told Caelynn that he had a relationship in his past with someone who was sexually abused, and that it was hard to watch someone he cared about go through something so painful. “Who am I to feel the pain when I wasn’t the victim?” he said. Caelynn told him it’s something that affected every single person in her life, so his pain is legitimate.
Caelynn told Colton she feels safe with him.
He replied: “You’re incredibly strong, you know that?”
Then Caelynn told the camera: “I feel like I’ve been through hell and back, but I think every time I open up it makes me stronger and I’m able to take a little piece of me back that was broken. I’m way stronger than I ever imagined. I wouldn’t open up with him about this if I didn’t feel safe with him ... It just feels right ... I can definitely see myself falling in love with him.”
When the show faded to commercial, ABC showed the number for RAINN, the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network: 800-656-HOPE (4673).
World War III averted
At the cocktail party before the rose ceremony, Caelynn told the camera she’s tired of the tension between her and Hannah B. and she wanted it to end. She asked a shocked Hannah B. if they could go off together and talk.
They both acknowledged that the tension has been uncomfortable. Hannah B. said she thinks it’s OK for them to be upset with each other. Caelynn asked if instead they could maybe be supportive of one another and put the past in the past.
Hannah B. admitted that the tension has caused her not to enjoy her time there as much. Then they both sort of apologized for the drama and hugged it out — but they both acknowledged they aren’t going to be “best friends” either.
“World War III was averted tonight,” Hannah B. said.
The Rose Ceremony
There was a big blow-up between Demi and Courtney again, and Courtney ended up going home. Once more, Demi is truly awful. Tracy also went home.
“The Bachelor” airs at 8 p.m. Mondays on ABC.
