Funeral announced for beach music Hall of Famer killed in a crash in Eastern NC

The funeral has been announced for Doug Winstead Jr., the singer, trumpeter and member of the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame killed in a crash April 11 in Dunn.

The 67-year-old Concord resident was a member of the Band of Oz. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2021 and was a songwriter of the year nominee.

Winstead died in a collision with a 2025 Peterbilt tanker truck, according to a North Carolina State Highway Patrol statement.

His funeral is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at Rock Haven Church, 3438 S. Halifax Road in Rocky Mount. The family will receive friends at the church from noon until the service.

Celebration of life gatherings will be held for Winstead on dates to be announced in Concord-Kannapolis and North Myrtle Beach, according to Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Service of Wilson.
