How ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Three Billboards’ made out at Thursday’s Critics Choice Awards

“Stranger Things 2” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” – both projects with ties to North Carolina – picked up awards Thursday night at the Critics Choice Awards in Santa Monica.

“Stranger Things 2,” the second season of the Netflix series created by Durham’s Duffer Brothers, scored when David Harbour, who plays Chief Hopper on the show, won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama.

“Three Billboards,” filmed in and around Sylva in Jackson County, N.C., won three awards: Frances McDormand for Best Actress; Sam Rockwell for Best Supporting Actor; and Best Acting Ensemble.

Martin McDonagh was also nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. (Guillermo del Toro won Best Director for “The Shape of Water” and Jordan Peele won for Best Original Screenplay for “Get Out.”)

McDormand and Rockwell each won Golden Globes at Sunday night's ceremony. The movie also won Globes for Best Dramatic Film and McDonagh won for Best Original Screenplay.

More awards to come

There are more awards on the horizon. The projects are nominated in upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards, Directors Guild Awards and Writers Guild Awards.
