The romantic drama “Outlander” has returned to North Carolina for its final season.

The TV show follows the Fraser couple’s relationship during the American Revolution. The new season — which premiered Friday, March 6 — is set in our state, but don’t expect to see real-life landmarks.

That’s because the scenes were “shot entirely in Scotland, which has stood in for NC for several seasons,” according to Courtney Sylvia, publicity director for the entertainment platform Starz.

Here’s what we know about the plot’s North Carolina ties and how to watch new episodes.

‘Outlander’ plot returns to NC

The show follows Claire Fraser, a World War II-era nurse who goes back in time to the 1700s. Earlier in the series, she and her husband, Jamie, landed in the fictional settlement of Fraser’s Ridge, according to IMDb and a news release from Starz.

“This season, Jamie and Claire return to ‘Fraser’s Ridge’ after spending most of last season traveling with the American army during the Revolutionary War,” Sylvia told The News & Observer in a Friday, March 6 email, adding that viewers will see how the pair adjusts to changes in the settlement.

The Frasers first arrived in colonial North Carolina during season four. More than a dozen places and historical figures that actually existed have been depicted on the show, according to the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and a 2018 report from The N&O.

“Outlander” made its debut in 2014.

“Two locations central to the series’ storyline — Tryon Palace in New Bern and Alamance Battleground in Burlington, site of the battle between the Regulators and Gov. William Tryon’s troops — are now preserved as state historic sites,” state officials wrote on their website at the time.

“Outlander” debuted in 2014 and is based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series of the same name. On the show, actors Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan play the two main characters.

How to watch ‘Outlander’ episodes

The eighth season of “Outlander” premiered last week. The show is set to end with the series finale in May

“One new episode will be available to stream weekly at midnight on Fridays only on the Starz app, all Starz streaming and on-demand platforms,” Victoria Mangiapane, senior publicity coordinator for the entertainment platform, told The N&O in an email. “This season has 10 episodes, with a skip week May 1.”

If you want to catch up on past seasons of the show, the entire series is available for streaming on Starz.
