What to Watch Monday: TV shows with local ties could get Emmys in tonight’s ceremony
Kenan Thompson (“Saturday Night Live,” “Kenan”) hosts tonight’s 74th Emmy Awards (8 p.m., NBC) with presenters including Raleigh’s own Ariana DeBose.
If you’re looking for other NC-related reasons to tune in, we’ve got ‘em. Several projects from the past year are not just connected to the state, but to Raleigh and Durham in particular.
2022 Emmy nominations with Raleigh / Durham, NC ties
Here are the categories to look out for if you’re interested in local connections.
- “The Staircase”: This exceptional HBO Max dramatization of Durham’s Michael & Kathleen Peterson saga really should have gotten more nominations than it did (Parker Posey was robbed). But as it stands, Colin Firth is nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie category for playing Michael Peterson and Toni Collette is up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for playing Kathleen. You can read The News & Observer’s coverage of “The Staircase” and the Peterson trial at newsobserver.com/topics/staircase.
- “Stranger Things”: Also repping the Bull City is the Netflix series created by Durham natives Matt and Ross Duffer, known professionally as The Duffer Brothers. The series has been nominated for 38 Emmys over the years, and has won 7 times. This year, the show is nominated in the Outstanding Drama Series category, plus some technical categories (and it already won several).
- “The Amazing Race”: This CBS series is nominated in the Outstanding Reality-Competition category. This past season, Raleigh’s Kim & Penn Holderness took home the big prize.
- Jerrod Carmichael, a Winston-Salem native, was nominated for his HBO stand-up special “Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel.” The special was nominated in the Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special category (Bo Burnham) and in the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Special category (Carmichael). Carmichael was also nominated in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series category for hosting “Saturday Night Live” in April. (Note: The Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Guest Actor awards were already given out, and Carmichael did not win. There’s still a shot in Monday night’s ceremony for the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Special award.)
