Head to the beach (safely), eat fair food and 12 Best Bets to get you through the pandemic
It’s the unofficial start to summer, and lifelong memories of beach trips and barbecues abound. As we prep these Best Bets, it’s uncertain when Phase One will turn into Phase Two — when restrictions are eased on businesses and gatherings. Here is what we know now.
NC Beaches
“I got my swim trunks and my flippie-floppies!” The beaches are open, y’all. Rules vary by town. Public restrooms may be closed, for example, and social distancing is still in effect. Whether it’s for a day trip, an overnight stay or the traditional Memorial Day weekend/weeklong mass exodus to the coast, the beaches are (mostly) back just in time to save the unofficial start of summer. Get all the info in our coverage at newsobserver.com.
Drive-Thru Fair Food Days
Get a taste of the State Fair without leaving your car. Head to the State Fairgrounds May 22-25 and May 29-31, from 12 noon to 8 p.m. for funnel cakes, deep-fried Oreos, deep-fried Snickers, candy apples and Dole Whip floats, among other decadent treats. Enter the fairgrounds parking lot via Trinity Road and order from your car. Drivers are asked to remain in their vehicles, and servers will come to you. Note that this is cash-only. Prices vary from $2 to $10. For a menu and prices, go to twitter.com/NCStateFair. Items may change for May 29-31.

All of them are currently settling into their newly renovated habitat. These lions will be an exciting breath of fresh air and a welcomed spark of energy to the #AnimalParkNC.” Clearly, plenty of roaring good times ahead.
