The bulk chicken sales continue in the Triangle. Here’s where to find the next one.

In these uncertain times, it seems the demand for bulk chicken has never been higher.

The Eastern North Carolina poultry company House of Raeford has created a chicken-buying frenzy with its weekly on-site sales held around the area. For the past few weeks, the company has been selling 40 pound boxes of chicken directly to customers, causing traffic jams and leading some to park their cars in line overnight.

The cash-only sales seem to appeal to customers looking to cut down on their trips to the grocery store, or who are finding store shelves low on chicken. The company said in an email that it had lost business due to the closing of restaurants and colleges, but felt the public demand for chicken was still high.

“The community needed it,” company spokesman Dave Witter said earlier this month in a phone interview. “They were having trouble finding meat in stores.”

The company goes through a few truckloads of chicken per sale, where breasts, thighs, legs and wings are sold 40 pounds at a time, with prices ranging from $15 to $60. Workers deliver the packages of chicken curbside so customers don’t leave their cars.

House of Raeford is doing seven to 10 sales per day, the company said, at sites in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Louisiana.

Here is the schedule near the Triangle:

  • Wednesday, April 29: State Fairgrounds, Gate 5, at 1025 Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh, starting at 9 a.m.
