Live roach in kitchen, flies in dining room: Triangle sanitation scores (July5)

The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of June 28-July 5.

Wake County sanitation scores

The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that 95 restaurant inspections were completed June 28-July 5.

Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Three restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Anjappar (101 Ledgestone Way in Cary) received a score of 86% during an inspection on June 28.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 19 standards. Of these, eight were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included seeing live roaches and other insects: “A live roach observed on the kitchen floor during inspection. Fruit flies and black flies present in the kitchen and dining area,” the inspection says.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 94% in March 2023 and 91% in September 2022.

El Salsa’s Mexican Grill (3501 Forestville Rd. in Raleigh) received a score of 87% during an inspection on June 28.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 22 standards. Of these, 11 were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included having roach spray on shelf next to microwave and chips, numerous foods kept at improper temperatures and some frozen foods improperly covered.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 90% in February 2023.

Jersey Mike’s #3101 (14460 Falls of Neuse Rd. in Raleigh) received a score of 88% during an inspection on June 29.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 18 standards. Of these, seven were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included not having hand soap at the handwashing sink, employees touching raw meat and ready-to-eat food without cleaning their hands and a chemical spray bottle hanging on a storage rack above food cans.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 91.5% in December 2022.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Durham County sanitation scores

The Durham County inspection management system shows 25 restaurant inspections were completed June 28-July 5.

Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Three restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Quickly Tea House (2604A Hillsborough Rd. in Durham) received a score of 88% during an inspection on June 29.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 15 standards. Of these, seven were considered critical violations.
  • Critical violations included an employee touching raw chicken and failing to sanitize their hands before touching single-use items afterwards, and having undated milk in the walk-in cooler.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 91% in April 2022 and 87% in September 2021.

El Dorado’s #6 (4900 NC 55 Hwy in Durham) received a score of 86.5% during an inspection on June 28.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 13 standards. Of these, five were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included numerous food items stored uncovered in the walk-in freezer and numerous other food items stored at improper temperatures.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 90% in March 2023 and 90% in July 2022.

Banh’s Cuisine (750 Ninth St. in Durham) received a score of 85% during an inspection on June 30.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 20 standards. Of these, 10 were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included having “numerous torn and open packages of raw pork, chicken feet, and pigs feet stored on the ground. Some items were moist, undated, and had discolorations,” the inspection says. Cooking equipment was often stored for later use with food debris and old oil.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 99% in March 2023 and 97% in September 2022.

Orange County sanitation scores

The Orange County inspection management system shows that 30 restaurant inspections were June 28-July 5.

All restaurants received an A grade.

Johnston County sanitation scores

The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that eight restaurant inspections were completed June 28-July 5.

All restaurants received an A grade.

Chatham County sanitation scores

The Chatham County inspections management system shows that that 13 restaurant inspections were completed June 28-July 5.

All restaurants received an A grade.
