Triangle restaurant gets ‘B’ for cockroach, files & dirty cups: Sanitation scores (April 1)
The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.
Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.
You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.
Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of March 25-31.
Wake County sanitation scores
The Wake County inspection management system shows that 97 restaurant inspections were completed March 25-31.
Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
Two restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.
Hibachi Sushi (3217 Avent Ferry Rd. in Raleigh) received a score of 87% during an inspection on Thursday, March 27.
The restaurant was in violation of 11 standards.
Violations included minor build-up inside the kitchen ice machine basin and ice maker compartment, several food items stored on the floor inside the walk-in freezer and several used food service gloves left scattered on the sushi prep surface rather than being appropriately discarded.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 90% in October and May 2024.
Starbar (1731 Trawick Rd. in Raleigh) received a score of 87% during an inspection on Thursday, March 27.
The restaurant was in violation of 18 standards.
Violations included a worker seen washing hands for about five seconds and then using an apron to dry them, the machine ice scoop stored in a soiled blue holder and some food containers, container lids and utensils were damaged or cracked.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 88% in October 2024 and 85% in February 2024.

Durham County sanitation scores
The Durham County inspection management system shows 34 restaurant inspections were completed March 25-31.
Most restaurants received an A grade.
One restaurant received a B.
La Casita Restaurant (2425 Guess Rd. in Durham) received a score of 89% during an inspection on Friday, March 28.
The restaurant was in violation of 14 standards.
Violations included a cockroach and flies seen during the inspection, dirty cups stored with clean cups and raw meats in almost every cooler and freezer found stored together instead of separated by types according to their final cook temperature.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 96% in December and July 2024.
La Isla Del Mar (315 Foushee St. in Durham) received a score of 87.5% during an inspection on Wednesday, March 26.
The restaurant was in violation of 17 standards.
Violations included raw chicken above beef in chest freezer, ice machine with pink build up and cleaner stored on shelving with food.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 88.5% in August 2024 and 81% in September 2023.
Note: The restaurant at this address comes up as “Isla Bonita” when searched on Google.

Orange County sanitation scores
The Orange County inspection management system shows that 23 restaurant inspections were completed March 25-31.
All restaurants received an A grade.
