The bar and brewery that helped give a foodie development early momentum will close this week after six years in business.

Mordecai Beverage Company, a small brewery and bottle shop, announced this week that it would close its doors, setting an open-ended final date as the last kegs and shelves run dry.

“It has been an incredible honor and privilege to serve this community for the past six-plus years,” owners Andrew and Megan Christenbury wrote on their website. “When we first opened our doors, we could never have imagined the friendships, memories, and overwhelming support that would come our way through every high and low along the journey.”

Taking its name from the nearby Mordecai neighborhood, Mordecai Beverage opened in Summer 2019 — the early days of a foodie revival in the Gateway Plaza shopping center.

Along with Union Special Bread, Mordecai was one of the first hospitality businesses to join the shopping center, which has since added numerous restaurants and bars, including the acclaimed Mala Pata, the popular Miso Ramen and relocations of Fiction Kitchen and Escazu Chocolates. The popular neighborhood bar Natural Science also opened behind Mordecai.

Mordecai Beverage was distinctive for being Raleigh’s first brewery bottle shop, with Christenbury brewing many styles of small batch beers. The shelves were stocked with craft beers from around the state and country.

The closing continues the Triangle’s craft beer slump, as several popular taprooms and breweries have shut down in recent months.
