As the Triangle’s final Kmart prepares to close, we now know what will replace it
It’s official.
Target will replace Raleigh’s last Kmart, which is scheduled to close for good next month.
A spokesperson for Target’s corporate communications confirmed on Tuesday that a new store will go in at 8701 Six Forks Road in Raleigh. The new store will be approximately 114,000 square feet.
“We’re excited to bring an easy, convenient shopping experience to additional guests in the community with this new Target location,” the spokesperson wrote in an email to The News & Observer.
The company had no comment on the anticipated opening date at this time.
The Kmart store on Six Forks Road, which opened in 1988, announced its closing in mid-December. A manager at the store told The News & Observer at the time that the store is scheduled to close in mid-February, but it depends on how quickly the inventory is liquidated.
Sears Holding, Kmart’s parent company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2018 and has been closing Sears and Kmart stores across the nation.
The Kmart on Western Boulevard in Raleigh closed at the end of 2018, as did the Sears store at Crabtree Valley Mall. A Kmart on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh closed in 2014.
When the Six Forks Road Kmart closes, the last remaining Kmart store in North Carolina will be in Kill Devil Hills.
