Five Places to Watch in 2026
The last few years may have had some economic challenges nationally, but the Triangle remains one of the fastest-growing regions in the country (and North Carolina one of the fastest-growing states). Here are five locations around that Triangle that will look significantly different, thanks to that growth, by the end of 2026.

If you’ve been to downtown Cary lately, you’ve probably noticed a crane, concrete slabs, the bones of a future parking deck, unfinished building structures, and fresh asphalt on the southeast corner of West Chatham Street and South Harrison Avenue.
While the scene looks jumbled right now, all the pieces will soon come together for a mixed-use project split between two buildings called the Jordan Project.
The two buildings combined have 330,000 square feet of office, retail and living spaces as another luxury option for people to live, work and shop in downtown Cary. With over 180,000 residents in Cary, downtown has grown in recent years with more nightlife options, housing and now a state-of-the-art downtown park attracting thousands of visitors each month.
The Jordan Project adds to that growth while paying homage to one of the founders of Cary, Henry Jordan, who was a town council member in 1871 and later became mayor. He is also the ancestor of the businessman who owns Chatham Street Commercial and Northwoods Associates, the developers behind the project.
Construction began last spring after the historic Ivey-Ellington Waddell House was relocated from the corner after 150 years. The home now lives on South Academy Street facing one side of Downtown Cary Park.
Retail, office and luxury apartments
In the first building, The Jordan, office and retail space will take up 80,000 square feet.
Right now, the office portion of the Jordan is being pre-leased and once those thresholds are met, construction will begin, according to Jordan Gussenhoven, the co-owner of Cary’s Chatham Street Commercial Development Group.
Tenants have not been announced for the building but on the retail side, there are about four suites for future occupants with room for a restaurant.
The parking deck will join the Jordan building with 478 spaces. Of those spaces, 253 will be for residents in the apartment building and 225 will be public parking owned by the town of Cary.
Meridian Cary will have 195 apartments on 250,000 square feet. Leasing has not yet opened for the new apartment building but it is similar to the Meridian at Harrison Pointe Apartments on Banyon Grove Loop. That luxury building has one- to three-bedroom units ranging from $1,300 to over $2,000.
There is no commitment to affordable units for residents in Meridian Cary. Residents will be able to live in the apartment building by the end of 2025.
