Coronavirus

Wake County reports 2nd coronavirus outbreak at a nursing home. Durham cases top 300.

Wake County now has its second coronavirus outbreak at a long-term care facility.

Sunnybrook Rehabilitation Center, in Raleigh, has five confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to a Monday news release. At least 25 residents are being tested after showing symptoms of the disease.

Three residents have tested positive with two in isolation, while one is being treated at WakeMed Health and Hospitals. The other two cases are employees at the facility.

Sunnybrook offers long-term, respite, hospice and dementia care at its 95-bed center.

“We consider residents of long-term care facilities like this one to be at higher risk for serious illness if they contract COVID-19, because they’re generally older and may have other health conditions,” said Wake County Medical Director Dr. Jose Cabanas in a news release. “That’s why we’re working closely with the center to conduct additional testing to prevent the spread of the virus and keep people safe.”

Wake County’s first outbreak at a nursing home was at Wellington Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Knightdale late last week, The News & Observer reported.

What begin as four positive cases has jumped to 48 total, according to the Monday news release.

Overall, Wake County reported 16 new cases Monday, bringing the county’s cases to 496, according to the county’s website.

Durham County

Meanwhile, Durham County officially reported Monday it now has more than 300 confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

Thirty-four more county residents tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the county’s total cases to 324.

Also Monday, Durham County reported it now has outbreaks at three nursing homes. The state considers an outbreak as two or more cases. Here were the outbreak totals Monday:

▪ 15 cases at Durham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

▪ Four cases at Durham VA Healthcare System Community Nursing Home

▪ Four cases at Treyburn Rehabilitation Center

Orange County

The state website listed 151 cases of coronavirus in Orange County on Monday, one more than it reported over the weekend. The county did not issue a news release, and its website listed 144 cases.

Orange County has two reported coronavirus deaths, according to both the state and county websites.

The county has COVID-19 outbreaks at two nursing homes, including at PruittHealth Carolina Point on Mt. Sinai Road where four people have died. The state reports deaths among nursing home residents under the residents’ county of residence, not the county of the nursing home, the health department has said.
