Three nursing homes in Durham now have coronavirus outbreaks

Durham officials on Monday announced three separate coronavirus outbreaks at long-term care facilities.

Cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in residents and staff at Durham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Durham VA Healthcare System Community Nursing Home and Treyburn Rehabilitation Center.

According to a Durham County press release, there are:

Four cases at Treyburn Rehabilitation Center

“We are working closely with our long-term care facilities and the North Carolina Department of Health and Services to minimize the impact of COVID-19 at these facilities,” said Durham Health Director Rod Jenkins in the release. “The safety of our long-term care residents and all Durham County residents is paramount as we continue in our COVID response.”

According to nursing home ratings on Medicare.gov, Durham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Treyburn Rehabilitation Center have one-star ratings out of five — considered “much below average.” The Durham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was also cited for abuse in 2019, which the site says includes verbal abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and mental abuse.

The Durham VA Healthcare System Community Nursing Home has a five-star rating according to the Veterans Affairs Community Living Center compare report.

Nursing home outbreaks across the state

Franklin County officials reported two deaths related to COVID-19 at the Louisburg Nursing Center Monday. Both people died on April 12 and were patients at the facility, according to Franklin County health director Scott Lavigne.

That center now has 47 positive coronavirus cases after testing all 61 patients and all staff at the nursing home, the release states. Of the 47 cases, 35 are residents and 12 are staff members.

Wake County reported 43 more cases Sunday in a nursing home outbreak at Wellington Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Knightdale. This brought the total number of cases at Wellington to 47, up from four positive cases Thursday.

There are currently 20 patients and 27 staff members who tested positive. Results are pending on 21 additional tests at the facility.

At Pruitt Health-Carolina Point in Orange County, four residents at have died and 86 people, including 20 staff members, had been infected, The N&O previously reported.

In Chapel Hill, Signature Health had 31 positive cases.
