The show goes on despite COVID-19: Wake is posting students’ musicals, plays and more

The show is still going on — virtually at least — for the many Wake County performing arts students who lost out on the chance to showcase their talents due to the coronavirus pandemic.

All North Carolina public schools have been closed since mid-March due to COVID-19, canceling many of the spring performances that would have been held at schools. The Wake County school system is honoring these talented students by posting on social media video clips and photos using the #WCPSSOnWithTheShow hashtag.

Wake is encouraging the public to also use the #WCPSSOnWithTheShow hashtag to honor students. This week is also Teacher Appreciation Week so the district is encouraging people to thank Wake teachers on social media using the #WCPSSThankATeacher hashtag.

“Our hearts go out out to the thousands of students who worked so hard preparing for school spring performances, including musicals, plays, concerts and dances,” Wake County Superintendent Cathy Moore said at a news conference Friday. “So we are celebrating these students the best way that we can under these circumstances.”

Since last week, Wake has posted highlights from musicals such as ‘The Addams Family” at Cary High School, “9 to 5” at Athens Drive High School and “Hairspray” at Broughton High School.

“In the midst of the challenges we have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, we haven’t forgotten about the enormous amount of talent displayed by our students,”” Wake posted on Facebook last week. “A few of our spring musicals and concerts got to happen right before we transitioned to remote learning. Many did not.

“But the show must go on (one way or another)!”

Thursday would have been Fuquay-Varina High School’s Senior Concert so choral director Taylor O’Donnell asked some students to record from home the songs they would have performed. Senior Mary Obiol chose “For Good” from the musical “Wicked.”

“I dedicate this to all my friends throughout my four years,” Obiol said.
