Durham nursing home reports more than 20 coronavirus-related deaths
A nursing home in Durham has reported that 21 of its residents have died of coronavirus-related causes, making it one of two facilities in North Carolina with more than 20 deaths.
The data was reported Friday by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services as part of a biweekly congregate living report. The report also includes coronavirus cases and deaths at residential care facilities, correctional facilities and migrant farmworker housing.
The Durham nursing home is Treyburn Rehabilitation Center, which reports 93 confirmed coronavirus cases and 21 deaths. Only The Laurels Of Chatham in Chatham County has also reported 21 deaths.
There are 83 nursing homes with outbreaks, according to DHHS, or two or more cases.
There are 2,910 confirmed coronavirus cases at nursing homes, according to Friday’s report. With 401 deaths, nursing homes make up 55% of the state’s 728 coronavirus-related deaths, according to the report.
The percentage of nursing home deaths in Durham and Orange counties is higher. Out of Durham’s 43 coronavirus-related deaths, 37, or 86%, have been at nursing homes.
And in Orange County, all of the county’s 39 deaths have been at nursing homes. In Wake County, 25 of the county’s 32 deaths have been at nursing homes.
Nursing homes are often home to people most vulnerable to the coronavirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people over the age of 65 with preexisting health conditions are most vulnerable to the complications from the coronavirus.
Here is a look at data in Triangle counties:
Wake County
The state reports that an outbreak at Capital Nursing & Rehab Nursing Home in Raleigh is considered over. That means there’s no “evidence of continued transmission” in about 28 days. The outbreak was first reported April 30, and there two cases among staff members reported.
▪ UNC REX Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center, Apex: 47 cases and 2 deaths. That is an increase of 14 cases since Tuesday. These are the first deaths the facility has reported.
▪ Sunnybrook Rehabilitation Center, Raleigh: 48 cases and 10 deaths. In the previous report, 62 cases were reported. The state has told The News & Observer that data is preliminary and can change as cases are investigated.
▪ Wellington Rehab and Healthcare, Knightdale: 81 cases, 13 deaths. That is an increase of four cases and one death since Tuesday.
Durham County
In Durham County, there are three ongoing outbreaks. The outbreaks at Hillcrest Convalescent and Durham VA Community Living Center are considered over.
▪ Durham Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Durham: 111 cases, 16 deaths. That is an increase of one death since Tuesday.
▪ Treyburn Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Durham: 93 cases, 21 deaths. That is an increase of five cases and two deaths since Tuesday.
▪ Carver Living Center: 34 cases. That is an increase of 18 cases since Tuesday.
Orange County
▪ Parkview Health and Rehabilitation Center, Chapel Hill: 4 cases. There is no change since Tuesday.
▪ Pruitt Health-Carolina Point, Durham: 112 cases, 20 deaths. That is no change since Tuesday.
▪ Signature HealthCARE of Chapel Hill: 72 cases, 19 deaths. That is an increase of two deaths since Tuesday.
Johnston County
▪ Springbrook Nursing and Rehab, Clayton: 83 cases, 16 deaths. That is an increase of one case since Tuesday.
Chatham County
▪ The Laurels of Chatham, Pittsboro: 109 cases, 21 deaths. There was no change since Tuesday.
▪ Genesis Health Care LLC Siler City: 48 cases, 2 deaths. That is an increase of nine cases and two deaths since Tuesday.
Franklin County
▪ Louisburg Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Louisburg: 69 cases, 19 deaths. There was no change since Tuesday.
▪ Louisburg Manor: 3 cases. There was no change.
