Second suspect held in robbery and shooting at Durham bank

Larry Lamar Johnson, the second of two men charged in a robbery and shooting at a SunTrust bank branch on Wednesday, was in custody Friday.

Lamar, who turned 29 on Monday, was being held on armed-robbery and conspiracy charges that police had filed. He turned himself in at the Durham County magistrate’s office downtown, police said.

On Thursday evening, police said they had found Javon Cheek, 24, who is accused of firing the shot that hit a bank teller in an arm during the holdup. In addition to assault inflicting serious injury, he also is charged with armed robbery, conspiracy and gun possession by a felon.

The SunTrust branch at 2008 E. N.C. 54 was robbed around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Police had issued security-camera photos showing a man with long, braided hair brandishing a pistol and holding an armful of cash.

They issued pictures from previous arrests, however, that showed Cheek and Johnson with close-cropped hair. Both have short hair in their arrest photos from Thursday and Friday.

Cheek also was charged with being a sex offender who did not report an address change, which is required by state law.

Cheek was being held Friday on $500,000 bail and Johnson on $300,000 pending court appearances.
