Residential developer wants ability to build 12 stories near new Raleigh Wegmans

A Virginia developer is asking the City of Raleigh for permission to build up to 12 stories on the site of a Sears Appliance Repair building on East Six Forks Road.

While the rezoning request asks for the ability to build up to 12 stories at 819 E. Six Forks Road, the application says the developer is interested in building a five-story apartment building there.

Currently the property allows up to three stories in height.

RBD Six Forks LLC, which shares the same address as the Charlotteville, Va.-based company Riverbend Development, bought the nearly 10-acre property from Sears last year for $5 million.

Along with raising the height limit on the property, the request asks to change the zoning of the property from industrial to residential.

If approved, it would be yet another development targeted at the area around the intersection of Wake Forest Road and Six Forks Road.

The property would be near Midtown East, an under-construction shopping center that will be home to a future Wegmans on Wake Forest Road.

In addition to Wegmans, Midtown East has named 13 other tenants so far, including a Starbucks, Maple Street Biscuit Company, Club Pilates and Cava (a Mediterranean fast casual restaurant).

The application highlights that it is within “walking distance” of the planned Wegmans and that it would bring “live, work, play” opportunities to an “evolving section ... of the city.”
