Man in custody after five-hour standoff with US Marshals, Garner police
A Garner man is in custody after a five-hour standoff that led a nearby school to go into a code yellow lockdown on Monday.
Shortly after 12:30 p.m., the U.S. Marshals Service attempted to serve a warrant to a man who was “refusing to come out” at a home in the 400 block of Avery Street.
The Garner Police Department was called in to support the Marshals, Garner Police Capt. Christopher Adams told The News & Observer.
Authorities were eventually able to get the man out of the home. No injuries were reported.
Capt. Adams could not confirm if the subject was armed or elaborate on the nature of the arrest warrant, citing the U.S. Marshals’ jurisdiction.
There were five other people were in the home but they were able to leave before the standoff ended, according to police.
Police did not say whether they were family members.
North Garner Middle School was on a code yellow “community lockdown” as a cautionary measure, reported ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.
Carpool traffic was diverted to the school’s gym on Curtis Street, and school officials said students were safe, according to ABC11.
During a community lockdown, the exterior doors of the school are locked, and no one is allowed to enter or leave the building.
Students were permitted to move around within the building, but outside activities were prohibited.
In addition to local and federal law enforcement, school administrators the Wake Schools Security Team were monitoring the situation, ABC11 reported.
