Pedestrian killed after being struck by multiple vehicles on I-40 in Durham

Two pedestrians were killed in fatal crashes in Durham since Saturday, according to police.

At approximately 12:43 a.m. on Monday, Benito Briones, 44, of Carrboro, ran out of gas along I-40 near exit 273 and was struck multiple times and killed while attempting to return to his car. He attempted to cross I-40 on foot and was struck by an SUV traveling west on I-40. Briones was then also struck by a semi-truck that did not stop.

The SUV had four occupants, and no injuries were reported, according to police, and investigators are searching for information on the semi-truck driver that struck Briones.

All lanes of I-40 Westbound were closed for approximately seven hours while police investigated.

Driver hits, kills female on Durham sidewalk

Around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, Edward Earl Gilchrist Jr, 67, of Durham was driving a 2003 Toyota Camry traveling south on Avondale Drive. Police said he veered left of the center and onto the sidewalk at the southeast corner of East Knox Street and Avondale Drive, hitting an adult female pedestrian who was walking north on the sidewalk, The N&O previously reported.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and police have not yet identified her.

Edward Earl Gilchrist was transported to Duke Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to maintain lane control, driving left of center, and driving with a revoked license.
