A Raleigh man was charged with involuntary manslaughter after one person was killed in a crash on Interstate 440 in Raleigh Saturday morning.
Tyree Bryant McKinnie, 28, was also charged with driving without a license and expired registration. McKinnie has many charges of driving without a license since at least 2019, court records show. He is accused of killing Bernard Wanjohi Kamara, 55, police said Saturday evening.
Police responded to the crash at 6:55 a.m., and found Kamara dead inside his Toyota Rav4 up against the median barrier wall. Police said their on-scene investigation and evidence showed that the left front tire on McKinnie’s car, a Volkswagen Passat, came off when McKinnie began to cross over the Atlantic Avenue bridge.
The tire crossed over the median barrier and onto the eastbound lanes, where it struck Kamara’s car, police said. The crash remains under investigation.
The inside lanes, both eastbound and westbound, were closed for several hours while police investigated the scene, but reopened Saturday afternoon, ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner, reported.
