Nextdoor, the hyperlocal social media app best known for helping you identify that thing in your yard, released its ranking of friendliest neighborhoods.

The ranking are based on how residents on the platform use it, including how welcoming a neighborhood appears to be and whether posts on the social media platform are considered “negative” or “positive.”

“When people are considering where to live in Raleigh, they want to know more than just the statistics—they want to understand what it’s really like to be part of that community,” said Kelsey Grady, chief communications officer at Nextdoor, in a news release. “Nextdoor is uniquely positioned to analyze neighborhoods based on real neighbor interactions to shed light on traits that make communities truly thrive.”

Raleigh’s ‘friendliest’ neighborhoods

Here are the five ‘friendliest’ neighborhoods in Raleigh as defined by Nextdoor:

  • East Raleigh: This neighborhood, as defined by NextDoor, stretches, and is bordered by Interstate 440, Atlantic Avenue, Poole Road and Raleigh Boulevard.
  • Stonehenge: This neighborhood is mostly located between Ray and Creedmoor roads.
  • Millbrook: This neighborhood is located between Capital Boulevard, New Hope Church Road, Bland Road and Spring Forest Road.
  • Five Points: This neighborhood is located between Atlantic Avenue, Capital Boulevard, Glenwood Avenue and Six Forks Road.
  • Hedingham: This neighborhood is located off of New Bern Avenue and the Neuse River.

The boundaries for what Nextdoor considers a neighborhood doesn’t always match up to what locals identify as their neighborhood boundaries, as the neighborhood was defined by its first members, according to Nextdoor’s website.

How were neighborhoods picked?

The social media app ranks the neighborhoods based on positive community interactions, according to a news release. Some of those interactions include:

  • Posts with negative or positive tones
  • Fulfilled neighbor requests for help or recommendations
  • Post expressing neighborhood pride or dissatisfaction
  • Number of free items shared on the website
  • Welcome posts that received responses from neighbors
  • Neighbors promoting or recommending local businesses

The city of Raleigh surveys residents every two years about their thoughts on Raleigh’s services and quality of life. Of the residents polled, 84% said their overall quality of life in the city is “excellent” or “good,” and 81% gave positive rating for the overall quality of life in their neighborhood.

Raleigh is often named one of the best places to live, and it was recently called one of the happiest cities in the United States, The News & Observer previously reported.
