Teen charged with murder of NC college student turns himself in, police say
Police investigators have arrested and charged an 18-year-old with murder in the shooting death of a student at N.C. Central University in April.
Keanan Odom Jr., 18, of Morrisville turned himself in Aug. 15 in connection with the killing of 22-year-old Myles Amadi Gresham, 22, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, according to a Durham Police Department news release.
Odom has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery in connection with this incident.
He is being held in the Durham County jail under $250,000 secured bail and court-ordered GPS monitoring.
What police say happened
At 3:29 p.m. on April 25, officers responded to a car crash in the 11000 block of Rose Garden Lane and found a car that had crashed into two other empty vehicles that were parked.
The driver, later identified as Gresham, was found with a gunshot wound and died at the scene, police said.
The crash happened at Lenox at Patterson Place apartments, reported ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.
In a statement upon Gresham’s death, NCCU Chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye said: “Myles ... was a dedicated student with entrepreneurial aspirations. He diligently selected his courses each semester, aiming for a path toward future success.”
“Actively involved in campus life, Myles served as treasurer of the Metro Eagles Club [a track and field club]. His friendly nature and enthusiasm for the Wordle game will always bring forth smiles from those who had the pleasure of knowing him,” he said.
2nd NCCU student shot in April
Gresham’s death was the second shooting of an NCCU student that month, The News & Observer reported.
Campus police arrested six students, charging all of them with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, in an April 2 shooting in Lawson Street Residence Hall.
The student who was shot in that incident was among those charged and survived the shooting, police said.
