Woman who died in hospital parking deck had fallen before being hit by car, police say
A woman who died after being hit by a vehicle in the parking deck of Duke Raleigh Hospital on Friday had tripped on a speed hump prior to the collision, a police report released on Saturday said.
Shortly before the incident, Mary Albrecht, of Angier, had entered the parking deck and was walking to her car, which was parked in a handicapped space. She tripped on a speed hump in the parking deck and fell onto her back, about 50 feet away from her car.
About the same time, the police report says, a man had driven a car from the second floor of the parking deck and was turning onto the first floor ramp at a speed of around 10 mph.
The driver of the car was unable to see Albrecht lying on the ground due to both a visual obstruction within the parking deck and the visual obstruction of the car itself.
When the driver ran over the speed hump, he simultaneously hit Albrecht. He dragged her 100 feet before stopping and caused fatal injuries, the police report says.
An investigation into Albrecht’s death is ongoing, Donna-maria Harris, a spokeswoman for the Raleigh Police Department, said.
The News & Observer is not naming the driver of the vehicle, a man from Knightdale, because he has not been charged. The police report says neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected to be a factor.
