A portion of a popular Raleigh greenway will remain closed for a couple of months after a Christmas Eve fire.

The fire destroyed part of a wooden bridge on the Walnut Creek Trail and will “require significant time” to be repaired.

The portion of the trail that is closed is between Walnut Overlook Way and South New Hope Road (mile markers 2.25 and 2.5).

The city of Raleigh estimates the reconstruction could last two to three months, and there will be no detour.

“A safe and feasible alternative route” isn’t available due to a lack of sidewalks, lack of space in the right-of-way to create a temporary route, and safety concerns crossing New Hope Road, according to the city.

The Walnut Creek Trail is the largest city greenway trail in the southern part of the city connecting Lake Johnson, Lake Raleigh, downtown Raleigh and, eventually, to the southern part of the Neuse River Trail.

No arrest has been made in connection with the fire, according to the Raleigh Police Department.
