NC hip-hop artist Box Carlito shot to death in Raleigh double homicide

A shooting in east Raleigh on Wednesday afternoon became a double homicide hours later when the second of the two men who were shot died.

Vincente Arocho, 28, and Jaquan Tyrone Dumas, 31, were shot at about 1:15 p.m. in the 2700 block of Community Drive, according to a Raleigh Police Department news release.

Arocho, 28, was declared dead at the scene.

Dumas, 31, was taken to WakeMed, where he died from his injuries, authorities said Wednesday night.

Arocho was a part of North Carolina’s hip-hop scene. He went by the stage name of Box Carlito, according to Urban Islandz.

In a video posted on Arocho’s Instagram account, he appears to pay bail for Dumas’ release from jail.

Arocho is seen paying a man in a bail bonds office. The video then switches scenes to show Dumas in front of the Wake County Detention Center.

The video was posted Tuesday, according to the timestamp. However, it is unknown when the video was shot.

Both Arocho and Dumas had been convicted of multiple felonies, including armed robbery and cocaine distribution, according to court records.

Arocho had pending federal indictments on charges of maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances and possession of marijuana with intent to sell and distribute. He paid bail, which was set at $1.25 million when The News & Observer reported on his arrest in July 2017.

A follow-up investigation is underway, according to Raleigh police.

As of Wednesday, there have been 20 homicides this year, including Arocho and Dumas.

There were 17 homicides in Raleigh last year.
