78-year-old man killed during argument at home in Durham

Durham police are investigating an argument between two men that turned deadly.

On Thursday, police announced that 78-year-old Joseph Winstead of Durham was killed in a shooting in East Durham.

Brett Cote, 35, of Durham has been charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in his death.

The men were involved in an argument Tuesday morning at a home on North Driver Street.

According to police, an adult male “experiencing a crisis” told officers that an altercation had occurred and another man had been shot in the residence.

Police said Winstead was pronounced dead at the scene, and Cote was taken to the hospital.

Police they believe this shooting was an isolated incident. Cote is currently being held in the Durham County jail without bail.

This is the 22nd fatal shooting in the city this year.
