Wake County mother accused of starving and killing her 10-year-old son
A judged ordered a Morrisville woman accused of starving and killing her 10-year-old son to be held in custody without bail Thursday.
Priyanka Tiwari, 33, made a brief court appearance after being charged with first-degree murder and negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury Thursday morning.
Judge Ned Magnum appointed a capital defender to represent her.
Warrants allege Tiwari intentionally killed her son and that she had been starving the boy for an unspecified amount of time.
On Wednesday morning, Morrisville police were called to Tiwari’s home on Craigmeade Drive about an unresponsive child. Officers could not revive the boy.
“It was determined that significant time had passed since the child’s death due to the state of the body,” said a statement from the town of Morrisville.
The child’s autopsy was scheduled for Thursday morning.
Police believe the abuse and neglect were contributing factors in the boy’s death.
In the past year, police were called to Tiwari’s residence eight separate times, according to police.
Police cannot confirm if Tiwari had any dealings with the Wake County Department of Social Services.
Tiwari’s next court date is Jan. 11.
