The Durham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting apparently sparked by road rage Tuesday night, officials said Wednesday.

The incident occurred about 9 p.m. Tuesday when a driver traveling on South Mineral Springs Road near N.C. Highway 98 honked at a dark blue Chevy Malibu for driving slowly, according to a Durham County Sheriff’s Office news release. When the Malibu turned off South Mineral Springs Road, someone inside allegedly fired several shots into the other vehicle, grazing a passenger, the release said.

The driver of the damaged car, a 19-year-old woman, continued to their original destination nearby before calling 911, according to the release and incident report. EMS determined the grazed passenger, a 19-year-old man, didn’t need to be taken to the hospital, the incident report shows. The victims’ names are not being released to protect their safety, according to David Bowser, a spokesperson for the Durham County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators found 20 shot casings and a projectile at the site of the shooting, according to the incident report. Bowser said Thursday that “this is still a very active investigation as we continue interviewing independent witnesses to determine what happened.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigation Division at 919-560-0880.
