1 dead, 2 injured, in 3 shootings over 4 days in Cary. What we know.
The Cary Police Department is asking for the public’s help in three shootings over four days that left one person dead and two people injured.
The first shooting was reported shortly after 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of Berry Chase Way, a residential area off McCrimmon Parkway, police said.
A woman with multiple gunshot wounds was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries as of Saturday morning, according to a news release.
Her name was not released.
Just over 24 hours later, Cary police received a report of a shooting in the Green Parking Deck at the upscale Fenton shopping center at 8:45 p.m. Friday.
Officers found 23-year-old Corey Edward McNeill dead from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle, a press release said.
Malik Emaje Scott-McClarin, 24, turned himself in shortly after McNeill’s body was discovered, officials said. He was charged with murder and is being held in the Wake County Detention Center. His bail was set at $1.5 million secured Monday, court records show.
Police have not released further details, but WRAL reported prosecutors said Monday that Scott-McClarin told investigators the shooting was accidental.
Court records show Scott-McClarin and McNeill were both cited Oct. 21 in Johnston County after police allegedly found baggies, “long trays” and marijuana in the pair’s possession.
Cary police said in a press release that Scott-McClarin and McNeill knew each other and the shooting was “an isolated incident.”
“The Cary Police Department would like to assure the public that there is no ongoing threat to their safety related to this incident,” the release states. “We are grateful for the swift action and cooperation of our officers and community members which led to a quick resolution.”
In the third incident, a man was shot about 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the Burlington Coat Factory at 1745 Walnut St., police said. He was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg and is expected to recover, according to a news release.
Police announced Monday they’d identified a person of interest in the shooting but declined to release the names of anyone involved due to the ongoing investigation.
Anyone with information on any of the shootings is asked to contact the Cary Police Department at 919-469-4012 or anonymously submit a tip to Cary CrimeStoppers at 919-460-4636.
