A teenage boy has been arrested after a Durham County deputy found a gun on him at his middle school Thursday.

A disagreement broke out among several students at Lowe’s Grove Middle School about 12:30 p.m., according to a Durham County Sheriff’s Office news release. After a report of one of the students having a firearm, the school was locked down while the school resource officer conducted a search, the release said.

After finding a weapon on a 13-year-old male student, authorities took him into custody, according to the release. He will be charged with possession of a firearm by a minor and possession of a firearm on campus, the release said.

“A potential tragedy was averted today due to the quick actions of the Lowe’s Grove SRO, who intervened during an escalating confrontation between students,” Sheriff Clarence Birkhead said in a written statement. “We are grateful that this time there was a positive outcome.”

Anyone with information about criminal activity at a school can call 1-884-5-SAYNOW or text Durham Public Schools at 274637.

The student’s name was not released due to his age, and the Sheriff’s Office hasn’t responded yet to questions from The News & Observer.
