Durham triple shooting leaves man dead, 2 women seriously injured

Police are investigating an overnight shooting in northern Durham that left one man dead and two women with serious injuries.

Around midnight Thursday, 911 callers reported hearing gunshots fired in the 1600 block of Rowemont Drive, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner. Rowemont Drive is in the Braggtown area.

Officers found a man and two women shot inside a vehicle near the entrance to Whippoorwill Park.

All three were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The man, whose name and age have not been released as of 12:30 p.m. Friday, died at the hospital.

The triple shooting comes as overall reported shootings are sharply down this year in Durham.

According to Durham Police Department statistics, 51 people had been shot in the city as of May 24.

That was down from 96 people and 72 people shot by the same time in each of the previous two years.

Ten of the people shot this year died, compared to 16 and 17 in each of the previous two years, the statistics show.
