5-year-old child shot inside car in ‘road rage’ incident on US 1 in Cary

Cary police say they have arrested the alleged shooter whose bullet struck a 5-year-old traveling in a car on U.S. 1 Monday evening.

The child was riding with her father when the incident occurred, according to a news release. She was taken to the hospital and was expected to recover after undergoing “multiple medical procedures,” police said.

Tuesday night, police said Charles Edward Stevenson Jr. was taken into custody in Raleigh before 8 p.m. He has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and discharging a firearm into occupied property.

Monday’s shooting was a “road rage altercation” that began on U.S. 64 about 6 p.m., according to police. The vehicles then exited the ramp onto U.S. 1 Northbound, near the Cary Parkway.

As authorities investigated on U.S. 1, northbound traffic was heavy and two lanes were closed near Exit 99 for SE Cary Parkway.
