Cary police have arrested a man they say is connected to a road rage shooting Monday that injured a 5-year-old girl on U.S. 1.

Charles Edward Stevenson Jr. was taken into custody in Raleigh before 8 p.m. Tuesday, police said. He has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and discharging a firearm into occupied property.

The girl was shot around 6 p.m. Monday after an altercation on U.S. 1 near U.S. 64, The News & Observer previously reported. The child was riding with her father when someone in a silver 1990s-model Hyundai Elantra fired into the vehicle, striking her.

Police said Tuesday the child is doing well after “multiple medical procedures.”

A GoFundMe campaign is raising money to help 5-year-old Ema recover from a road-rage shooting Monday, June 30, 2025. “Her big sister, mom, and dad are by her side every step of the way, providing love and support during this difficult time,” the fundraiser states.

The girl’s family is asking for donations to support her recovery. A Gofundme posted Tuesday identified the victim as “Ema” and requested at least $20,000 to aid in her rehabilitation.

“The family is facing a long road ahead, with several weeks of recovery expected,” the fundraiser states. “After her hospital stay, she will need ongoing medical treatments, including physical therapy, counseling, and regular follow-up visits to ensure her full recovery.”

Any money raised will go to Ema’s medical bills and to support her parents, who are taking time off from work to be with their daughter, according to the Gofundme.

“This innocent little girl did not deserve to be caught in the crossfire, and her family is grateful for any support as they navigate this challenging journey,” the fundraiser states.

Tia Allison, who identified herself as Ema’s aunt, told The News & Observer on Tuesday that her niece was “in great spirits” and expected to make a full recovery.

“As for the incident itself, I’ll just say that our family strongly believes in justice, and we’re confident it will ultimately prevail,” Allison wrote in a Facebook message.

Anyone with any information in the investigation is asked to contact Cary police at 919-469-4012 or CrimeStoppers at 919-460-4636.
