A former Wake County Public School System employee was charged Thursday with assaulting a disabled middle-school student last month, court records show.

Jyl Crockett, a 57-year-old instructional assistant for special education at Carnage Middle School, is charged with assault on an individual with a disability after she allegedly kicked the student in the mid-section in March, “causing the student to stumble backwards,” according to court records.

Crockett first started working for the school in 2004 as a substitute teacher and has worked in the special education program since 2018. She resigned from her position Wednesday amid an investigation into the incident.

“The school system takes seriously its obligation to report potential abuse allegations to law enforcement and has fully cooperated with law enforcement in their investigation,” Sara Clark, the school system’s senior communications director, wrote in an email to parents on Thursday. “While privacy laws prevent me from providing additional information about the situation, I can share that Ms. Crockett no longer works for the school district.”

A warrant was issued for Crockett’s arrest on Thursday. She turned herself in to police later that day and was released on bond.

An investigation into the incident is still ongoing, according to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office. Crockett is set to appear in Wake County District Court on May 5.
