14-year-old charged with shooting, injuring man in Glenwood South district

A Rocky Mount teenager has been charged in an April 12 shooting in the Glenwood South district, the Raleigh Police Department announced Tuesday.

The teen was taken into custody and brought to a juvenile detention center Tuesday, police said. Detectives identified the 14-year-old as a suspect, and the Rocky Mount Police Department served custody petitions Tuesday.

The teen, whose name was not released because of his age, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, going armed to the terror of the public, injury to personal property, discharging a firearm within city limits and possession of a handgun by a minor, police said.

The shooting took place around 2:22 a.m. in the 500 block of Glenwood Avenue, police said. A man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The shooting investigation is still ongoing.

In a news conference soon after the Glenwood South shooting, Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce pointed to a problem of youth violence, saying young people in Raleigh “have a lot of free time on their hands,” and that one bad actor can lead to juveniles committing crimes.

Five days after the Glenwood South shooting, three people were injured in a shooting involving three 17-year-olds at Triangle Town Center on Apr. 17, The News & Observer previously reported. Raleigh police have not made any arrests and said Tuesday they have no update in that investigation.
